Technology transfer is the motivation for renewable energy development

At a meeting with David M. Turk, Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Energy said: The US currently has spent about USD 400 billion to promote the development of renewable energy sources. The US has the advantage of financial potential, science and technology while Vietnam has the potential for the development of renewable energy sources such as solar power, wind power. Technology transfer is the best solution for Vietnam in particular and developing countries in general to move from fossil fuels sources to renewable energy.

During his business trip to Vietnam, Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Energy, Mr. David M. Turk had a meeting with Minister Tran Hong Ha to open up cooperation opportunities between the two countries in the field of natural resources and environment. especially the issues of climate change and energy transition.

Talking with Minister Tran Hong Ha, David M. Turk said that the US has spent about USD 400 billion to promote the development of renewable energy sources. In addition, the United States has built national-level research centers taking advantage of science and technology to offer technological solutions to reduce the development and use of fossil fuels. Along with the US goal and Vietnam’s strong commitment at COP26, the US is ready to support developing countries in which Vietnam is given the top priority.

Faced with the increasingly crucial influence of climate change as well as the strong consensus of countries worldwide in efforts to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy,  David M. Turk said that the US has the advantage of financial potential, science and technology while Vietnam has the potential for the development of renewable energy sources such as solar power, wind power…  He hoped that there would be more meetings with Vietnamese partners to jointly develop cooperation programs, share benefits of both sides and work towards common goals in the near future.

Discussing with Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Energy, Minister Tran Hong Ha said that Vietnam has adopted national strategic policies to meet our Net zero target by 2050. In addition to the commitments on financial support from developed countries, Minister Tran Hong Ha declared that advanced technology would play an important role to achieve the above goals. The minister supposed that technology was similar to vaccine against COVID-19, so developed countries like the United States should transfer more technology to Vietnam or other countries so that the goal of replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy will soon be accelerated.

Regarding cooperation programs between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and US agencies, Minister Tran Hong Ha highly appreciated that the US has engaged in many cooperation activities and some support for MONRE’s agencies. The Minister hoped that the cooperation fields and activities between the two nations would be expanded and further bolstered, especially in implementing the results of COP26 and energy transition after Deputy Secretary David M. Turk ’s visit.

The Minister Ha suggested that Deputy Secretary David M. Turk  would continue to pay attention to promoting cooperation between Vietnam and the United States in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially taking on commitments on reduction of methane emissions. The US was also suggested to support Vietnam in connecting with financial institutions and credit institutions capable of providing financial and credit support to Vietnam as well as professional and technological support, capacity enhancement, including management capacity for Vietnam to taking on its commitments as well as the Global Initiatives on emission reduction and energy transition to reach the net ‘zero’ emission target by 2050 while the economic and social development goals were still guaranteed.

The Minister Ha also asked Deputy Secretary David M. Turk to pay attention to call foreign businesses and multinational corporations to invest in Vietnam to help Vietnam develop towards low emissions and high climate resilience.

In the spirit of cooperation for mutual development, the Minister wished Deputy Secretary David M. Turk and the delegation a successful business trip to Vietnam, inspiring and spreading actions to make an important contribution to combating the climate crisis, strengthening resilience, and moving towards a clean energy future.
